32 Missions of Jesus Christ

After completing the video on the 17 missions of the Holy Ghost, I wanted to continue and see what missions and roles Jesus Christ has in scripture. I decided to break them up into 3 categories. Pre-mortal, mortal, and post-mortal roles. By my simple research, I count 32 different missions he has to play in the plan of salvation of our Heavenly Father. This is certainly not comprehensive, but it is extensive.

Roles and Missions of Jesus Christ

Moses 1:39 – It is Christ’s work and glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. He does this by fulfilling a broad range of missions.

  • Pre-Mortal
    • Chosen and Prepared as the Firstborn
      • He was the chosen one from the beginning (Abr. 3:27)
      • Was prepared to redeem his people and make them sons and daughters (Ether 3:14)
      • As Firstborn, was the birthright son who inherits leadership of the family (BD Firstborn), special ordinances were provided for his redemption, receives a double portion, responsible for care of mother and sisters.
    • Cast out Satan and his host from the pre-mortal realm after Satan’s rebellion (Moses 4:3)
    • Creator of all things (John 1:3)
    • Light of all things
      • Holds all things together (Col. 1:17) (How?)
        • He was invested with priesthood power of the Father to hold all things in the universe in balance through the medium of the holy spirit of God. (D&C 88:7-13)
      • He was the Spirit of truth that came into the world to be the light and redeemer of His creations (D&C 93:9)
      • Our Conscience (light of Christ – Moroni 7:16-17)
    • Creates Enmity with Satan – He creates natural revulsion (enmity) between the children of God and Satan’s seed (Gen. 3:15; Rom. 16:20).
    • Lawgiver – why is this needed? To proclaim how we return.
      • He was Jehovah the lawgiver (Isa. 33:22). He gave the higher law to Israel which they rejected, so he gave the law of Moses and covenanted with Israel (3 Nephi 15:5).
      • Was the Word (John 1:14). Delivered the law and came down to fulfill it.
      • He is the author of eternal salvation for those that obey him (Heb. 5:9)
    • Head of Priesthood order and holds all its keys which he delegates to man to accomplish his purposes (JST Gen. 14:28; Alma 13:2; Hel. 8:18; D&C 76:57; D&C 107:3; D&C 124:123)
    • Baptizes with fire and sends the Holy Ghost (3 Nephi 12:1-2)
    • Covenant Maker and Keeper
      • The mighty God (Isa. 9:6) – one mighty in valor in Hebrew
      • King over the house of Jacob (Gen. 49:24; Luke 1:33)(The Abrahamic covenant was passed down to Jacob and includes all people.)
    • The Everlasting Father (Isa. 9:6) – one who is a father forever in Hebrew
      • Father of Creation (carried out the plan of our Heavenly Father)
      • Father of Salvation (by his atoning sacrifice)
        • Allows us to take his name upon us (Mosiah 1:11; 5:11; 25:23; 26:18; 3 Nep. 27:5; Moro. 4:3; D&C 18:21, 24; 20:37; 109:22*
      • Father by Divine Investiture of Authority (“I am the Father”) thus the representative of Heavenly Father to others
    • Wonderful counselor (Isa. 9:6)
  • Mortal
    • Minister of Salvation
      • The Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6) – minister of salvation, Christ directs other saviors on Mount Zion (Oba. 1:21)
      • Preach the gospel (Isa. 61:1; Mark 1:38; Luke 4:18)
      • Publishes peace (Mosiah 12:21)
    • Prophet (Deut. 18:15) (the great mouthpiece of God)
    • Our High Priest (Psa. 110:4) (one who performs all sacred rites)
      • One who executes judgment in righteousness (1 Nep. 22:21)
    • King of the Jews, King of Israel, the rightful heir, Son of David, Shiloh (Gen. 49:10; Psa. 132:11; Isa. 33:22; Jere. 23:5; Dan. 7:14; Mic. 5:2; Zech. 14:9; Matt. 2:2; 21:5; 27:11, 37; 27:42; Mark 15:2, 9, 12, 18, 26, 32; Luke 23:2, 3, 37, 38; John 1:49; 6:15; 12:13, 15; 18:33, 37, 39; 19:3, 12, 14, 15, 19, 21)
    • Performs the atonement as the perfect Lamb without blemish
      • Because he was a lamb, he also knows how to shepherd. To lead, you also have to be a great follower.
      • Came down to do the will of the Father (John 6:38; 3 Nephi 27:13)
      • Set the example of how to obey the commandments and do the will of the Father (Matt. 3:15; John 6:38)
      • Atone for our sins (Isa. 53:5; Zech. 13:6; Matt. 1:21; 18:11)
      • Be crucified (John 3:14; Mosiah 3:9)
      • Redeems us through his suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven (Mosiah 18:2; Alma 5:27; Alma 22:14) to bring into action the plan of mercy (Alma 42:15)
      • Brings salvation to those that believe on his name (Mosiah 3:9)
      • Makes us one with him and the Father (LOF 7:15)
    • Glorified the Father by taking upon him the sins of the world (3 Nephi 11:11)
    • Fulfilled the law of Moses (Luke 24:27, 44; John 1:45; 3 Nephi 9:17; 3 Nephi 15:5) and other prophesies
    • Gave the higher law of the gospel (3 Nephi 27:13)
    • The Second Comforter
      • Comfort his people (Isa. 25:8; 61:1; Luke 4:18)
    • Healer
      • Took upon him our infirmities and sicknesses (Matt. 8:17) in order to heal us (Luke 4:18)
      • Would suffer for our sins in order to heal us (Mosiah 14:5)
    • Reveals the Father
      • Show us the Father by his grace and truth (John 1:14)
      • Reveals the Father to man (Luke 10:22)
      • Ordained to receive the glory of the Father (John 12:23; John 17:1)
    • Those that receive Him have power to become the sons of God (3 Nep. 9:17) through adoption.
    • Head cornerstone (Psa. 118:22; Isa. 28:16; Matt. 21:42; Jac. 4:15) (all things are built off his perfect placement, his church and kingdom)
  • Post-Mortal
    • Savior over Physical Death
      • Overcome death (Isa. 25:8)
      • Firstfruits of the resurrection (2 Nep. 2:9)
      • Resurrect the dead (Isa. 26:19;  Ezek. 37:12; Matt. 27:52; 1 Cor. 15:22)
    • Savior over Spiritual Death
      • Overcome sin (Isa. 53:5)
      • He makes intercession for us (2 Nep. 2:9). He is the mediator of the new covenant so those called will receive eternal life (Heb. 9:15).
      • Stand between mankind and justice to satisfy the demands through the bowels of mercy (Mosiah 15:9)
    • Spirit World Ministry
      • Opening the prison to those who are bound (Isa. 61:1)
      • Proclaim liberty to the captives (Isa. 61:1; Luke 4:18)
      • Opened the door to missionary work in the spirit world (D&C 138:25) so vicarious ordinances could be performed for them (1 Cor. 15:29; 1 Peter 3:18-20; D&C 138:18, 30)
    • Judge
      • He has been given all judgement (John 5:22; Acts 10:42; Rev. 19:2)
      • He became subject unto man in the flesh in order to become our judge and have all men become subject unto him (2 Nep. 9:5)
    • Leader and Commander – Final casting out of Satan and his host into outer darkness (Isa. 55:4; 2 Pet. 2:9; Rev. 12:10; 3 Nep. 27:11; D&C 76:106)
      • He delivers his people (Exo. 14:21-22; 2 Nep. 6:17)
      • Saves and then reveals himself to the Jews at the battle of Armageddon (D&C 45:52)
    • The King of Glory will Return – Second Coming
      • He will come again in the glory of his Father with his angels (Zech. 13:6; Mal. 3:1; Matt. 16:27; 24:30; 25:31; D&C 33:17, 34:7) and destroy the wicked at his presence (Nahum 1:5; D&C 64:23)
    • Reigns over Zion as King in the Millennium
      • Brings good tidings, publishes peace, reigns over Zion 1,000 years (Isa. 52:7; Rev. 20:4; Mosiah 12:21; D&C 29:11)
      • Kingdom will never be overthrown. It will consume all other kingdoms (Dan. 2:44; 7:14; Rev. 11:15; D&C 76:108)
      • Puts all enemies under his feet (1 Cor. 15:25)
    • Exalt his people (Isa. 26:8)
      • It is the Father’s kingdom (Luke 11:2) but Christ brings people to it under his authority like a prince would.
      • Christ prepares our mansions (glory and habitation) above (John 14:2)
      • King of kings, Lord of Lords (Rev. 17:14)(To be such he must exalt his followers to such heavenly stations as kings and lords.)
      • Receives the family inheritance of power to then distribute it to the family who are joint-heirs (Rom. 8:17)
        • Receive a fulness of the Father (Matt. 28:18; Luke 10:22)
        • By finishing the will of the Father, he gained power to subdue all things (D&C 19:2; D&C 84:28)
